Everyone makes music for their own reason. Whether it be for self-gratification, money, fame and recognition or all of the above. Depending on how seriously you take your music career, it can be extensively more work than just a full-time job. In my opinion, it doesn’t matter why you make music as long as you’re happy with what you’re doing. For me, it’s a hobby. I never once counted on the fact that it could potentially pay bills. I’m not stupid. Hip hop in particular is a cut-throat industry with just as many (if not more) politics than any other music scene. With that being said, I think it’s important to be complacent and confident in whatever role you choose to play in music. Regardless which role, the music itself is the most important part and quality should certainly not be sacrificed. Quality is the first step, and without it, you’ve gotten off on the wrong foot.
On the other end of the spectrum, it’s also important for critics to recognize this about artists and to also understand their own role in music. I know too many people that study the music industry and don’t know the first thing about making music. These people make themselves out to be experts by Tweeting recycled blog content and useless artist advice. For the record, no one ever got famous from what they read on the internet. And anything you read today that holds any validity will more than likely be obsolete tomorrow. Any artist who has ever found fame, found it by making their own path. Critics can say what artists should and should not do, but why should an artist listen to someone who isn’t capable of doing it themselves? The music industry is slowly becoming about everything except the music itself and this is the part that puzzles me. I want so bad to be a part of this music. And I want so bad to NOT be a part of the music industry. But with one, comes the other.
In this day and age, music is so far removed from what it used to be, but that doesn’t have to be a bad thing. Something that has changed for the better is the fact that the tools required to create music are so easily accessible by anyone. In terms of lyricism, you’d don’t even need tools. Along with this evolution came the development of countless sub-genres and nowadays, there is so much music out there for everyone. It’s truly hard to keep up. Today, I don’t know one person who has the exact same tastes as me and there is nothing wrong with this. But it’s testimony to why I take everyone’s musical opinion with a grain of salt.
This concludes my rant. Bottom line: Fuck everyone and their opinion. Whether you’re an artist or a critic, do you and let everyone else do them.

Recently, I’ve been asked several times why I’m involved in this kind of music and how it all came about. It’s actually kind of ironic. All the people that I grew up and attended school with would probably have a hard time believing I’m involved in some form of hip hop.

Every day has been getting a little better. I’m eating and sleeping better. I don’t feel like shit every single morning. I’ve been more active and social. As a result of my improved mental health, I can write, produce and create at the same capacity that I was used to. I’ve also set a couple of short term and long term goals for myself that will a) keep me busy and b) improve the person I am. Off the dome:
0. Rid the world of liars.
1. Make more. In every aspect of my life.
2. Become fully independent.
3. Not give anyone a third or fourth chance ever again.
4. Learn PHP/Drupal.
5. Go on a cruise.
6. Finish my instrumental album.
6. Finish Blood & Sulfur
6. Get tattooed again.
7. Learn Spanish.
8. Start dating again and meet a nice girl.
Pretty ambitious right? It’s cool, I got my whole life in front of me.
The Scribblenauts album is mixed, mastered, and ready. I’m working on the artwork at the moment. We have some awesome plans for the album’s release. We’ll be making more detailed announcements as the release gets closer.
I’ve had the pleasure of mixing and collab-ing on Early Adopted’s newest mixtape I’ll Eat You Up which will be dropping real soon. It’s really really good. I wish I could leak it for the world to hear, but you’ll have to wait. Featuring myself, Defiance, HW, Nobody Cares and others. Honestly, it’s solid… Get at the kid and be friends with him before he blows up and forgets about your lame ass.

On a side note, I’ve been planning on making an instrumental album for a while. I haven’t mentioned it yet because I didn’t know when I was actually going to follow through with the idea. However, it’s underway and I’m really excited to announce it. It doesn’t have a name yet, but it’s basically going to be a continuous mix of grimey hip hop garage-ish dubsteb slumpy robot fuck music.
That’s all for now. Stay up,
®

Here’s a new joint I made recently. It doesn’t quite fit into what I’ve been working on so I decided to post it as a single. Cover artwork by Jenny Bruno. Enjoy.

I decided that I would edit my blog entry. After re-reading it, I realized it was a rant that came out when I was hurt and angry. I guess I’ll make a note not to blog when I’m upset.
Man, I’ve had a really frustrating year so far. I can’t believe it’s already mid-April. Time has been an absolute blur. It took the warm weather and the longer days to make me realize it’s been a while since I’ve been my old happy self. I’ve never been more confident in my abilities or integrity. I constantly work to refine my bad habits and persevere to become a better friend and human being. But even though I’m happy with myself, I still feel empty. Its been like this since Seana and I split. Needless to say, I reflect on everything that has happened in the past 6 months pretty often. I have been able to slowly come to terms with it. I don’t understand or accept it, but I don’t think I’m going to get any more closure than I already have. I guess it just wasn’t meant to be.
In the immortal words of Joshua Decosta trying to quote that J. Geils song:
“Love sucks… whoa, whoa!”

I got my act together and built a website/blog for myself and my music. I’ve had a number of blogs over the years that I was never committed to but now that I’ve put some time and energy into setting this one up, I hope to be more consistent.
My name is Jacobus Rainis and I’ve been creating for the past 5 or so years under the Redlist alias. I’ve put out four major bodies of work. The Headache MusicĀ trilogy which was comprised of three albums that were released between 2006 and 2009. I like to consider this phase developmental. I’ve also released an EP with my good friend and fellow producer FaceOne (SF Bay/Boston) under the name Sunshine Salesmen. This as well as Headache Music v3.1 are available for free download in the music section.
